A strong earthquake measuring magnitude 6.5 struck the southern Mexican state of Guerrero early on Friday, sending residents and tourists rushing into the streets as buildings shook across a wide area. The quake was recorded by the German Research Center for Geosciences.
Tremors were felt not only in Guerrero but also hundreds of kilometres away in Mexico City and the coastal resort city of Acapulco. Earthquake warning alarms sounded across the capital, prompting quick evacuations from offices, homes and public buildings.
President Claudia Sheinbaum was holding her morning news conference in Mexico City when the alarms went off. She and the journalists present evacuated the venue calmly. A short while later, she returned to resume the briefing and shared initial updates from authorities on the ground.

“There was no serious damage in Guerrero reported immediately,” Sheinbaum said in a post on X after speaking with the state’s governor. She added that emergency protocols had been activated and communication with affected areas was ongoing. The president also said that no damage had been reported in the capital.
Sheinbaum later told reporters that she had spoken with Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado, who confirmed that there were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties in the state.
Authorities in Mexico City carried out routine safety inspections following the quake. While officials said there was no critical damage to major infrastructure, some residents reported minor impacts. According to Turkiye Today, cracks appeared in the walls of some buildings in a few neighbourhoods, and small pieces of debris were seen on the streets.
In Guerrero, local officials said that despite the strength of the tremors, no deaths or major structural collapses had been reported at the time of writing. Emergency teams remained on alert as assessments continued.
The shaking was felt from Acapulco’s coastal areas to the densely populated heart of Mexico City, once again highlighting the country’s exposure to seismic activity. Mexico sits along one of the world’s most active tectonic zones, and strong earthquakes are a recurring threat, particularly in southern states like Guerrero.
While a full assessment of the damage is still underway, early reports suggest the quake caused more alarm than destruction, with authorities stressing that monitoring and precautionary measures remain in place.
