Thinking about leaving it all behind and starting fresh abroad? You’re not alone. Each year, InterNations’ Expat Insider report surveys thousands of people who’ve already taken the leap, revealing the countries where life is easier, happier, and more affordable.

The 2025 edition is based on responses from over 10,000 expats across 172 nationalities, ranking 46 destinations (down from 53 in 2024) on Quality of Life, Ease of Settling In, Working Abroad, Personal Finance, and Expat Essentials—from housing to digital access.

This year, Asia shines especially bright, with Thailand, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, and Malaysia all making the top 10. For many expats, these countries hit the sweet spot between affordability, vibrant culture, and opportunity. Here are the 10 best countries to live in 2025, as rated by expats themselves:

1. Panama – A Tropical Paradise for Expats
Panama takes the crown again in 2025. With 94% of expats reporting overall happiness, this Central American gem blends natural beauty, safety, and modern comforts. From rainforest hikes to oceanfront coffee mornings, Panama offers something for everyone—retirees, professionals, and digital nomads alike.

2. Colombia – South America’s Rising Star
Colombia climbs to second place this year, thanks to affordable housing, lively cities, and strong financial satisfaction—81% of expats are happy with their money situation, compared to just 54% globally. While concerns about safety remain, the country’s warmth, music, and sense of community make it an increasingly popular long-term choice.

3. Mexico – Easy to Settle In, Hard to Leave
Mexico may have dropped from the top spot, but it remains a firm favorite among expats. Known for its friendliness and vibrant culture, Mexico ranks number one in Ease of Settling In. Making friends, feeling at home, and enjoying a buzzing social life all come naturally here.

4. Thailand – Affordable Tropical Living
From the street food stalls of Bangkok to Chiang Mai’s creative energy, Thailand continues to enchant. Expats love its low living costs, tropical lifestyle, and buzzing expat communities, making it a haven for both digital nomads and retirees.

5. Vietnam – Affordable and Welcoming
Vietnam impresses with affordability: 89% of expats are happy with the cost of living, and 87% say their income is enough for comfort (vs. 40% and 69% globally). Many stay long-term—over half of respondents have lived here five years or more, while nearly one-third want to stay forever.

6. China – Work Opportunities and Rising Satisfaction
China jumps dramatically from 19th to 6th in 2025. Expats praise its career opportunities and fair pay, with job satisfaction rising to 76%. A shorter workweek—averaging 41.4 hours—may explain the boost. Historic culture, modern cities, and strong professional prospects make China a surprising winner.

7. United Arab Emirates – Luxury Meets Career Growth
The UAE combines tax-free salaries, world-class infrastructure, and cosmopolitan cities. Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer luxury living, thriving career opportunities, and a multicultural atmosphere, making it especially attractive to professionals and families chasing both opportunity and lifestyle.

8. Indonesia – Versatile Expat Haven
Indonesia’s appeal lies in its versatility. Whether it’s Bali’s surf culture, Jakarta’s business scene, or Yogyakarta’s arts, expats find affordable living and endless opportunities for adventure. Teaching, tourism, and remote work are thriving sectors here.

9. Spain – Mediterranean Lifestyle at Its Best
Spain offers sunshine, culture, and easy mobility. Expats note how safe and convenient it is to get around, with 87% satisfied with walkability and cycling options (vs. 77% globally). From Barcelona’s buzz to Valencia’s coastal charm, Spain balances lifestyle and comfort.

10. Malaysia – Affordable and Family-Friendly
Malaysia closes the top 10 with a winning mix of affordability, quality healthcare, and multicultural living. Kuala Lumpur’s modernity, Penang’s food scene, and Langkawi’s laid-back vibe make it a favorite for families, professionals, and retirees alike.

Whether it’s Panama’s tropical charm, Vietnam’s unbeatable affordability, or Spain’s Mediterranean lifestyle, these top 10 destinations show that expat life in 2025 is all about balance, opportunity, and community.
