In a major move to bring transparency to its Tatkal ticket booking system, Indian Railways will introduce Aadhaar-based OTP (One-Time Password) authentication for online bookings starting July 1, 2025. Announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the initiative aims to eliminate touts and middlemen, making the process more secure and equitable.
From July 1, passengers booking Tatkal tickets via the IRCTC official website or mobile app must be Aadhaar-verified users. This mandate will soon extend to Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and authorised agents as well.

No Agent Bookings in Opening Window
To further curb unfair practices, Indian Railways has restricted authorised agents from booking Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window:
Passenger Reservation Charts to Be Issued 24 Hours in Advance
Another reform announced by Minister Vaishnaw involves issuing reservation charts 24 hours before a train’s departure, instead of the current 4-hour window. This will particularly benefit passengers with waitlisted or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets, giving them more time to plan or make alternate arrangements.
This change, already being piloted in the Bikaner division, has received positive feedback and will soon be implemented nationwide. It is especially helpful for those on long-distance routes, where last-minute updates often cause inconvenience.
