In a fresh travel advisory issued on February 23, 2026, the Embassy of India in Tehran has asked all Indian nationals currently in Iran to leave the country by any available means of transport, including commercial flights, citing the “evolving situation” and ongoing unrest.
The advisory comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, along with renewed anti-government protests in several Iranian cities.
What the latest advisory says
In its official statement, the Indian Embassy urged students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists to make arrangements to depart Iran at the earliest.
“In view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals who are currently in Iran are advised to leave Iran by available means of transport, including commercial flights,” the statement noted.
The advisory is a continuation of earlier notices issued on January 5 and reiterated on January 14, 2026, in which the government had already advised Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to exercise caution.

Why the advisory was issued
The situation in Iran has remained volatile in recent weeks. Fresh clashes have been reported in Tehran following mass demonstrations last month. According to reports, thousands of students staged anti-government protests at universities in Tehran and other cities as campuses reopened after a month-long closure due to earlier unrest.
At the same time, tensions between Iran and the United States have intensified amid Washington’s continued pressure over Tehran’s nuclear programme. The US has reportedly increased its military presence in the region, while Iranian officials have warned of retaliation in the event of an attack, even as they continue to express hope for diplomatic engagement.
Against this backdrop, the Indian government’s advisory is being viewed as a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the safety of its citizens.
Travel implications for Indians
With the government now advising departure “by available means,” travellers are encouraged to check flight availability, monitor airline updates, and remain in regular contact with family members and Indian authorities.
As tensions persist and protests continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of Indian nationals in Iran. Citizens are advised to act promptly, remain cautious, and follow official guidance issued by the government.
