India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train to launch from Delhi this September—All you need to know

Indian Railways is all set to revolutionise long-distance train travel with the launch of its first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express in the end of September 2025, just ahead of Diwali. The much-awaited service will run from Delhi to Patna via Prayagraj, covering a distance of nearly 1,000 kilometres in just 11.5 hours, compared to the 23 hours taken by the Rajdhani Express on the same route.

This new addition to the Vande Bharat fleet promises flight-like comfort at train fares, combining speed, convenience, and modern amenities for overnight travellers.

A Game-Changer in Indian Rail Travel

Unlike the existing Vande Bharat chair car trains, the sleeper version is specifically designed for long-distance, overnight journeys. With a top speed of 180 km/h, it is expected to halve journey times across major routes.

Passengers can expect to pay about 10–15% more than Rajdhani Express fares, but in return, they will enjoy better comfort, modern interiors, and a faster journey.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Coach Features

The upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, developed by BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) in collaboration with the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), has been designed to redefine overnight train journeys in India. Packed with advanced engineering, premium comfort, and modern technology, the train ensures a seamless blend of speed and luxury.

The train will consist of 16 coaches with a total capacity of 1,128 passengers, spread across three classes—AC First Class, AC 2 Tier, and AC 3 Tier. Each class is tailored to meet the needs of different types of travellers, offering a range of comfort levels at affordable fares.

Passengers can look forward to real-time audio and video announcements, LED information screens, and CCTV surveillance, making the journey both informative and secure. The addition of automatic sliding doors, touch-free bio-vacuum toilets, and disabled-friendly berths and restrooms ensures greater accessibility and hygiene.

A standout feature is the introduction of hot water showers in First AC coaches, a first in Indian Railways’ history, giving travellers a hotel-like experience on wheels. Each berth will also be equipped with USB charging ports, reading lights, and personal conveniences, while modular pantry units will take care of onboard catering needs.

On the safety front, the train is fitted with state-of-the-art systems including emergency braking mechanisms, anti-climbing technology, and Kavach anti-collision technology to provide maximum protection during travel.

Speed and Routes

The first Delhi–Patna Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is expected to depart from Patna at 8 PM and reach Delhi by 7:30 AM, completing the journey in just 11.5 hours. This will make overnight travel faster, more comfortable, and far more efficient compared to existing trains like the Rajdhani Express. Apart from the Delhi–Patna route, Indian Railways is also considering several other long-distance corridors for future services, including Delhi to Ahmedabad, Delhi to Bhopal, Delhi to Howrah, Delhi to Mumbai, Delhi to Pune, and Delhi to Secunderabad. These routes will further strengthen connectivity across the country while significantly reducing travel times.

Pocket-Friendly Alternative to Flights

The Vande Bharat Sleeper aims to provide air travel-like comfort at a fraction of flight costs. With modern interiors and better travel times, it bridges the gap between premium rail services and airlines, making it ideal for both business and leisure travellers.

Maintenance and Future Expansion

A dedicated Vande Bharat Sleeper depot and workshop is being set up near Bengaluru, expected to be ready by early 2026. Currently, 10 sleeper trains are being built at BEML Bengaluru with ICF collaboration, ensuring more such services across India in the coming years.

Railway Minister’s Announcement

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, at an event in Gujarat, confirmed: “Vande Sleeper is coming very soon—in September 2025.”

Alongside this, he also announced new train services including the Rewa–Pune Express, Bhavnagar Terminus–Ayodhya Cantt Express, and a Jabalpur–Raipur train.

Why It Matters

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express represents the next phase of Indian Railways modernisation after the success of Vande Bharat Express, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat. It not only enhances speed and passenger experience but also provides an affordable and sustainable travel option for India’s growing middle class.

With its launch, Indian Railways is set to redefine overnight rail journeys—faster, safer, and more comfortable than ever before.
