Bekal Fort, located in the Kasaragod district of Kerala, is one of the best-preserved forts in the state, covering around 40 acres. Built in 1650 AD by Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi (Ikkeri) dynasty, the fort was constructed purely for military defence, with no palaces or administrative buildings inside.
Its location on the Arabian Sea gave it a clear strategic advantage. Nearly three-quarters of its perimeter faces the water, making it ideal for spotting and defending against sea-borne threats. The design shows careful military planning, a zigzag entrance to slow advancing enemies, trenches for protection, and narrow slits in the walls for firing at different ranges.
In the late 18th century, Tipu Sultan of Mysore strengthened the fort’s defences. He added a large observation tower, complete with steps leading to the top, as well as a water tank and an ammunition magazine. From the tower, guards could survey the coastline and inland areas with ease.
After Tipu Sultan died in 1799, control of the fort passed to the British East India Company. Over the years, it gradually shifted from a military post to a historic landmark.
Today, Bekal Fort is admired for its massive laterite walls, panoramic sea views, and cultural significance. Visitors can walk along the ramparts, climb the observation tower, and enjoy sweeping views of the Arabian Sea and surrounding coconut groves.
The fort also entered popular culture when it featured prominently in the Tamil film Bombay (1995), especially in the song “Uyire,” which showcased its scenic seaside setting.
Bekal Fort stands as a striking example of coastal military architecture in India, reflecting centuries of regional power struggles and maritime strategy, and remains a must-visit destination for history lovers and travellers to Kerala.
