




In recent weeks, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital has been grappling with congestion, resulting in long waiting hours for passengers and many of them have been complaining about the situation on social media.
After the Tata group took over the loss-making Air India in January this year, the airline has been working on expanding its services and fleet.
Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, Jyotiraditya Scindia said India has tremendous connectivity between Tier I-II cities.
The minister added that all agencies have swung into action in the last 24-36 hours to mitigate congestion at all major airports.
The minister highlighted that India has a very effective international to domestic air connectivity and also domestic tier I to tier II cities.
Jyotiraditya Scindia, along with senior ministry officials, visited Terminal 3 of the airport amid complaints from passengers about long queues and waiting hours in recent days.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Scindia also said a new site, Parandur, has been chosen for Chennai's second airport -- a greenfield one -- out of the four sites offered by the Tamil Nadu government.
Jyotiraditya Scindia also said in the Lok Sabha that the increase in traffic is due to the 'resurgence of traffic' and also partly because of the 'democratisation of civil aviation' and expansion of the network across the country.

The government on Thursday launched DigiYatra, which is based on facial recognition technology for air passengers, at Delhi, Bangalore and Varanasi airports.
With DigiYatra, it will be paperless entry for passengers at airports and the passenger data can be automatically processed based on a facial recognition system at various checkpoints, including at security check areas.
