If you're waiting for the iPhone 17 series to launch later this year, you might want to start saving up. According to a new report from Counterpoint Research, the upcoming iPhones could carry a higher price tag than the iPhone 16 lineup and tariffs are a big reason why.

The research firm says Apple is likely to pass on some of the increased costs from US import tariffs directly to customers. That means the iPhone 17 models could be more expensive than what we’ve seen in previous years.

Counterpoint originally expected global smartphone sales to grow by 4.2% in 2025. But due to rising geopolitical tensions, particularly the uncertainty around US trade policies and tariffs, the firm has now cut its growth forecast down to 1.9%. In the US specifically, both Apple and Samsung are expected to see a drop in sales, with price hikes likely to impact consumer demand.

In China, another major smartphone market, growth is expected to be nearly flat this year. Despite government subsidy programs meant to encourage people to upgrade their phones, the response has been lukewarm so far.

While the exact pricing for the iPhone 17 series is still under wraps, the report suggests that unless trade conditions improve, we could see Apple adjusting prices to protect its margins. If more aggressive tariffs are reintroduced — something that remains a possibility, the prices could climb even higher.

So, if you're planning to upgrade to the iPhone 17 this September, be prepared to spend a little more than you did on the iPhone 16.
