An app with the blunt name “Are You Dead?” is quietly finding an audience among people who live alone. It sounds shocking at first, but the idea behind it is surprisingly gentle.
The app, called Sileme in Chinese, was launched in May and has already become the most downloaded paid app in China. It is aimed at people who live by themselves and worry that if something goes wrong, no one will notice for days.
Using the app is simple. Every two days, users open it and tap a big button to confirm they are okay. If they forget or are unable to do so, the app sends a message to a chosen emergency contact saying the person may need help. That is all it does, and that is exactly why many people like it.
The app was first available for free but now costs 8 yuan, or about $1.15. It is described as a safety companion for people who live far from family, work in another city, or prefer living alone. With more people choosing independent lives, the timing seems right. Researchers estimate that China could have up to 200 million one person households by 2030, driven by both ageing adults and younger people moving out on their own.
Still, the name has made some users uncomfortable. Many people have said they dislike the word “dead” and feel it gives the app a gloomy tone. Some have suggested renaming it to something softer like “Are You Alive?” The creators have said they are listening to the criticism and may rethink the name. They also plan to add features such as text message alerts and basic messaging inside the app.
Online reactions have been mixed. On Reddit, some users called the app thoughtful and practical, especially for elderly people or those with health concerns. Others said it feels like a sad sign of modern life, where someone living alone might go unnoticed without a reminder.
Similar apps already exist. Snug, for example, asks older users to check in every morning and calls for help if they do not respond.
Despite the awkward name, “Are You Dead?” touches on a very real fear. For many people living alone, that simple check in button feels less morbid and more like a quiet safety net.
