WhatsApp, the popular Meta-owned instant messaging platform, is reportedly planning to launch a new feature to let users create usernames for their profiles. According to the WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, this feature will allow users to create usernames for connecting with other WhatsApp users, without sharing their phone numbers.
This privacy-focused feature is under development and was only spotted on the web client of WhatsApp currently. It may be released in the future for other platforms as well. WABetaInfo also shared a screenshot, where we could see a ‘Pick your username’ toggle and a below tab to write the preferred username.
During the setup process, users will be also able to select a unique username, subject to availability, which will serve as their unique identity on the app. This approach prioritises privacy and streamlines the process of connecting with other WhatsApp users, without sharing their phone numbers.
It could also let WhatsApp Business users create a unique username based on their brand identity which is separate from their phone number. Additionally, the report mentions that the username creation feature is undergoing rigorous testing and refinement to guarantee a seamless, secure, and error-free experience that meets the high standards of the WhatsApp user base.
Recently WhatsApp also announced the rollout of a ‘Favorites’ filter for chats and calls. It is essentially a new filter wherein you can store all your frequently used contacts to seamlessly connect with those users quickly.
