WhatsApp has rolled out a new bundle of features for Android and iPhone users ahead of the holiday season. The update introduces changes across calls, chats, Status and desktop, focusing on smoother communication and better ways to stay connected during busy periods.
New call featuresOne of the key additions is missed call messages. When a call goes unanswered, users can now record a quick voice or video note in a single tap, depending on the call type. The recipient can listen to or watch the message later, reducing the need for traditional voicemail.
WhatsApp has also introduced reactions in voice chats. Voice chats allow users to move from messaging to live audio without ringing the entire group. With reactions, participants can respond using emojis during an ongoing voice chat without interrupting the conversation.
Group video calls are getting a speaker spotlight feature as well. During video calls, the active speaker is automatically prioritised on screen, making it easier for participants to follow the conversation.
Chat and desktop improvementsMeta AI image creation on WhatsApp has received improvements. According to the company, the image generation experience now uses enhanced model capabilities from Midjourney and Flux, resulting in better-quality images. This update is aimed at helping users create personalised visuals, including holiday greetings, to share in chats or on Status.
WhatsApp is also adding the ability to animate images using Meta AI. Any photo can now be turned into a short animated video, adding more expression when shared in chats or posted as a Status update.
On desktop, WhatsApp has rolled out a new media tab. This feature lets users search for documents, links and media across chats in one organised place, making file management easier on Mac, Windows and the web.
Link previews have also been refined. Long URLs are now displayed in a cleaner, more compact format to avoid cluttering conversations.
WhatsApp Status is gaining new interactive stickers. Users can add music lyrics, post questions and include tap-based stickers that allow viewers to engage directly with the update.
Channels are also getting a questions feature. Channel admins can now ask questions and collect responses from their audience in real time, improving interaction within Channels.
With these additions, WhatsApp continues to expand its messaging experience across voice, video, AI and desktop platforms for Android and iPhone users.
