A man has gone viral on X after claiming he caught his cook stealing fruits and vegetables from his fridge with the help of what he calls an “AI roommate”. The user, Pankaj, shared that he built a basic but functional AI-powered monitoring system for his kitchen that keeps an eye on daily activity and alerts him in real time.

According to his post, the system uses a camera setup in the kitchen combined with an AI vision model to observe what is happening while the cook is at work. Whenever the cook takes something from the fridge, the system tracks it and sends him a notification. This is how he was able to catch the alleged theft “red handed”, as he described it.

Pankaj explained that the AI doesn’t just monitor food usage. He has trained it to look for other behaviours as well, such as whether the cook washes her hands before preparing food and whether she cleans the kitchen slabs after finishing. The system also compiles a weekly report, giving him a broader view of what’s happening in his kitchen over time.

He said the setup is still in its early stages and far from perfect, but it is already spotting things he would have otherwise missed. In just one week, he claimed, the system flagged two instances of food being taken without his knowledge, after which he decided to let the cook go.

On the technical side, Pankaj revealed that he is using an AI model called Claude Haiku 4.5 for visual analysis. To address privacy concerns, he said face detection is handled locally on his device, and faces are blurred before any data is processed further by the AI system. He is also working on moving the entire setup to a Raspberry Pi so that it can run fully offline in the future.

He added that he plans to expand the system’s capabilities, including features like gas leak detection and tracking idle time in the kitchen.

The post has sparked mixed reactions online. While some users praised the innovative use of AI for home monitoring, others raised concerns about privacy and surveillance, especially in domestic work environments. Regardless, the experiment highlights how quickly AI tools are finding their way into everyday life, sometimes in unexpected ways.
