Hollywood is buzzing over Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated actor who isn’t human but is already gaining massive popularity online. Appearing in comedy sketches on Instagram, Tilly looks and acts like a real person, but she’s entirely computer-generated. As per Los Angeles Times, her creator recently announced that she would be signed by a talent agency, treating her like a professional actor, and that has sparked a heated debate.

Many actors, including stars like Emily Blunt, Whoopi Goldberg, and Natasha Lyonne, have described the situation as “scary” and “deeply misguided.” The concern is simple: AI actors like Tilly could replace real human performers, while using the work and performances of real actors without permission or payment.

On Instagram, Tilly posts updates such as: “I may be AI, but I'm feeling very real emotions right now. I am so excited for what's coming next!” But while the AI might seem charming online, actors and unions are sounding the alarm.

The actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, has criticized Tilly, calling her a “character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers.” Union President Sean Astin explained that AI isn’t creating something entirely new—it’s reusing the creativity of human actors, often without their consent or compensation.

This isn’t the first time Hollywood has grappled with AI. Just two years ago, SAG-AFTRA members went on a 118-day strike to secure better protections for actors against AI misuse. The union fears that AI-generated performers could undermine actors’ jobs, making it harder for real talent to find work.

Despite the controversy, Astin said he is open to discussions with Tilly Norwood’s creators to explore a fair way forward.

AI is pushing the boundaries of entertainment but it also raises serious questions about ethics, copyright, and job security for actors. For now, Hollywood is watching closely, as a digital actor goes viral while real performers wonder what the future holds.
