Salesforce co-founder and CEO Marc Benioff has shared a personal account of how the idea for building Salesforce emerged in an unconventional setting — while swimming with dolphins in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. The account surfaced from a recent interview, where Benioff reflected on the moment that eventually led him to leave Oracle and start what is now a multi-billion-dollar cloud software company.
The moment that shaped Salesforce
According to Benioff, the idea for Salesforce came to him in 1999 while he was swimming with a large pod of dolphins off the coast of Hawaii, where he lives. He said the experience gave him clarity about a new technology and business model that could change how enterprise software was delivered.
Benioff explained that during the swim, he visualised what Salesforce could look like and how software could move away from traditional on-premise licensing toward a subscription-based, internet-delivered model. At the time, such an approach was still considered unconventional in enterprise technology.
He has often spoken about paying attention to his instincts, dreams, and insights, and described this moment as one of the clearest examples of intuition guiding a major career decision.
Quitting Oracle and seeking backing
Following this realisation, Benioff said he understood that turning the vision into reality required more than inspiration. He decided to leave his senior role at Oracle, where he had worked closely with founder Larry
Benioff recalled visiting Ellison and informing him of his decision to quit. During that conversation, Ellison provided initial financial backing of $2 million, which helped Benioff start Salesforce. The company was formally founded soon after, marking the beginning of Salesforce’s journey in cloud computing.
Influence of philanthropy and India connection
Benioff also spoke about the role of philanthropy in shaping Salesforce’s culture. He linked this outlook to guidance he received from Indian spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi during visits to India. According to
Benioff, she emphasised the importance of giving back while building a successful organisation.
This philosophy later became a core part of Salesforce’s identity, reflected in its emphasis on corporate social responsibility alongside business growth.
