Perplexity has introduced a new AI system called Personal Computer, designed to turn a Mac into a persistent AI agent capable of handling tasks across applications and online services. The tool works as software that runs on an existing Mac device, allowing users to assign tasks that the system can execute independently across different platforms.
The company describes Personal Computer as a continuously running assistant that can operate in the background and manage workflows even when the user is not actively using the device.
How the AI system works
Personal Computer is not a standalone hardware device. Instead, it operates as software installed on an existing Mac, enabling the AI system to access local files, applications, and browser sessions.
The system can break down large instructions into smaller tasks and manage them automatically. It continues processing these tasks in the background until the objective is completed.
According to the announcement, the platform coordinates between 19 and 20 AI models, including specialised versions of Claude as well as other large language models. This multi-model structure allows the system to analyse user instructions, split them into subtasks, and execute them asynchronously.
Users can assign a broad objective to the AI, and the system manages the sequence of steps required to complete the task, even if the process takes several hours or days.
Perplexity says Personal Computer can integrate with commonly used productivity platforms. The system supports connections with services such as Gmail, Slack, GitHub, Notion
