OpenAI may soon move beyond software and into your pocket or ears.

The company is on track to unveil its first-ever physical device by the end of 2026, according to Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer. Speaking at an event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Lehane said the company expects to present the long-rumoured device to the public within that timeframe. The comments were first reported by Axios.

Lehane was careful not to lock OpenAI into a firm deadline. He described the end-2026 window as the “most likely” timeline and added that things could still change depending on how development progresses. He also did not reveal what the device is, what it does, or what problem it is meant to solve. That silence has only added to the mystery surrounding OpenAI’s first hardware product.

Much of what is being discussed right now comes from unconfirmed leaks rather than official announcements. A China-based leaks account known as Smart Pikachu recently claimed that OpenAI is working on an audio-focused product that could compete with wireless earbuds like Apple’s AirPods. According to these claims, manufacturing partner Foxconn is involved in a project codenamed Sweetpea, which is said to be part of a larger internal effort called Gumdrop.

The leaked details suggest a small, ear-worn device with two pieces, one for each ear, along with a compact charging case. It is also said to use a powerful chip similar to those found in smartphones. The same leaks claim OpenAI could release several related devices between now and 2028, including a home device and even a pen. None of this has been confirmed by OpenAI.

So far, the company itself has shared very little about its hardware plans. What it has shown publicly has been more conceptual than concrete. Last year, OpenAI released a short and unusual video featuring CEO Sam Altman alongside legendary designer Jony Ive, whose design firm has since joined forces with OpenAI. The video focused more on feelings, connection, and intuition than on product features.

In a later interview, Altman and Ive continued to keep details vague, speaking instead about simplicity and creating objects that feel natural and unintimidating to use. What exactly that translates to in real-world terms remains unclear.

For now, all that is certain is that OpenAI wants to build something physical, and it wants it to feel different from the usual gadgets people are used to. Whether that vision turns into a breakout device or an ambitious experiment will only become clear when OpenAI finally shows what it has been working on.
