Microsoft has confirmed that its gaming division is developing a next-generation Xbox console, currently code-named ‘Project Helix,’ signalling a new phase for its gaming landscape. According to the company, the upcoming console will focus on leading performance, and this device is confirmed to play both Xbox and PC titles, finally putting an end to months of industry rumours.
Microsoft’s Project Helix: Key details
In a post on social media, Sharma said Team Xbox had discussed its "commitment to the return of Xbox" with its future console, which will "lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games." After her appointment last month, Sharma emphasised a commitment to console and hardware under her leadership. "We're going to keep meeting players where they are," she said. "I am committed to 'returning to Xbox,' and that starts with console, that starts with hardware. We also know there are a lot of players who aren't on console or our hardware, and I want to deliver great games to them too."
Project Helix will be the fifth generation of Xbox consoles. The latest Xbox consoles include the Xbox Series X and Series S. While this cross-platform compatibility could offer high performance, the company did not reveal more. Microsoft has previously hinted that the new console would be a big performance leap compared to the current generation.
Sharma says she'll be talking with partners and studios about Project Helix (and presumably its ability to play PC games). Last month, AMD confirmed that it was working with Microsoft on a semi-custom SoC for Project Helix and suggested that it could be ready to support a launch in 2027. Critically, these PC-exclusive features are only available through the Xbox app on PC; with the Xbox app only supporting native gameplay. Multiple reports also indicate that ‘Project Helix’ will be capable of playing PC games from various storefronts, such as Steam and the Epic Games Store as well.
