Man bought AI.com for Rs 300 in 1993, ends up selling it for Rs 634 crore

A rare two-letter domain bought for a negligible sum decades ago later delivered a massive payday, as rising interest in artificial intelligence transformed AI.com into a digital goldmine.

A domain name purchased for a few hundred rupees more than three decades ago has turned into one of the biggest digital asset deals linked to the artificial intelligence boom, underlining how early internet bets can deliver massive returns.

In 1993, entrepreneur Arsyan Ismail bought AI.com for around Rs 300, at a time when websites were still in their early stages and artificial intelligence remained largely confined to academic research.

Short domain names had little perceived commercial value back then, and the two-letter web address remained largely dormant or redirected for years. For most of its life, AI.com was seen more as a digital curiosity than a business asset.

How the AI boom pushed valuations higher

The rise of generative AI, machine learning platforms, and consumer-facing AI tools over the past few years dramatically changed demand for digital branding linked to artificial intelligence.

As companies rushed to position themselves in the AI space, short and memorable domains became limited online real estate. The term “AI” quickly evolved into one of the most searched technology keywords globally, driving strong interest in premium web addresses connected to the sector.

This shift steadily lifted the valuation of AI.com, turning what was once a negligible purchase into a highly sought-after digital property.

The Rs 634 crore deal and the new owner

By 2025, negotiations around AI.com intensified, eventually resulting in a reported sale worth around Rs 634 crore. The buyer, Kris Marszalek, is expected to develop the domain into a consumer-focused artificial intelligence platform rather than holding it as a passive investment.

Industry watchers say the acquisition reflects a broader trend where domain names are increasingly treated as strategic digital assets — similar to premium real estate in high-traffic online locations.

Two-letter domain names are extremely rare, and when paired with fast-growing technologies, they offer instant brand recognition and credibility.

As more startups and large firms compete for attention in the AI space, ownership of simple, direct web addresses is becoming a long-term branding strategy rather than a marketing afterthought.
