India is very well poised, with a strong IT sector, to take advantage of technological developments in AI, and prosper in this era, Wikipedia’s Co-Founder Jimmy Wales told Moneycontrol in an exclusive interview.
On the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit, Wales said that this was his third trip to India in 2026, and he is working on making Wikipedia available in more languages. "The (AI Impact) Summit is exciting…it brings global focus on what’s happening in India," he noted.
Wales said that this year, he met locals in Kerala. "They have interesting ideas on how to grow Wikipedia in the languages of India," he said.
He highlighted that, as of now, the website is available in 25 Indian languages. "The (Indian) community is the third largest community contributing to English Wikipedia."
He added that "we want more people to join us."

Meanwhile, on AI, Wikipedia’s Co-Founder said that it is improving machine translation. "People are able to work in more languages." However, he added, "AI is not trustworthy".
On the issue of misrepresentation of facts about India’s maps, Wales said that the community in Wikipedia is "passionate about neutrality". "They are passionate about presenting an argument from all sides. We have to remain true to that value," said Wales.
In 2020, the Central government had written to Wikipedia to remove the link to an incorrect map of the union territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir.
"Somebody comes to Wikipedia, and they quickly generate something that’s not true, they will be blocked by the community," said Wales.
