  • India is ChatGPT's largest market outside the US with 100M users
  • Indian users lead in coding, data analysis, and learning tasks
  • Young Indians drive ChatGPT use, especially for work and study

India is now ChatGPT’s largest market outside the US, crossing 100 million weekly active users. New data from OpenAI Signals shows Indian users are not just adopting AI quickly, but using it heavily for coding, data analysis, learning and task-focused work, well above global averages.

Coding and data analysis surge past global averages

According to OpenAI, India is emerging as one of the most technically engaged ChatGPT markets. The company’s new public data initiative, OpenAI Signals, reveals that Indian users are adopting advanced tools at significantly higher rates than the global median.

Usage of ChatGPT’s data analysis tools among Plus and Pro subscribers is around four times the global average. Use of Codex for coding tasks is roughly three times higher. Indian users are also nearly three times more likely to ask coding-related questions and twice as likely to use ChatGPT for education and learning queries.

Geographically, coding-heavy usage is concentrated in major technology hubs, with Telangana leading, followed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The broader milestone is just as striking. ChatGPT in India has crossed 100 million weekly active users, making it the largest market outside the US and the fastest-growing market for Codex, with weekly usage in India rising fourfold in the past two weeks.

Young users and practical work drive momentum

Work remains a major driver of usage. Around 35 per cent of consumer messages in India are work-related, compared to roughly 30 per cent globally. At work, users primarily rely on ChatGPT for drafting and editing, technical assistance and debugging, and accelerating workflows.

Outside professional contexts, usage is increasingly practical. Roughly 35 per cent of non-work messages focus on practical guidance, while about 20 per cent each relate to general information and writing tasks. This points to growing use for self-learning, decision-making and personal productivity.

Demographically, India’s adoption skews young. Users aged 18–24 account for just under half of all messages, compared to around one-third globally. Those aged 18–34 contribute roughly 80 per cent of consumer messages, underscoring a youth-led shift from experimentation to everyday reliance.

Ronnie Chatterji, Chief Economist at OpenAI, said AI adoption is moving faster than measurement tools can keep up, adding that OpenAI Signals aims to ground India’s AI debate in data rather than hype.

The findings suggest that in India, ChatGPT is evolving from a curiosity to a core utility, particularly for coding, learning and early-career productivity.
