The HDMI Forum has officially announced the release of HDMI 2.2, the latest version of the HDMI specification, introducing major upgrades to bandwidth capacity and video performance. Unveiled on June 25, 2025, HDMI 2.2 brings significant advancements aimed at supporting next-generation displays and immersive content. The highlight additions include a maximum bandwidth of up to 96Gbps and a new feature name, Ultra96, to help consumers identify compatible cables and devices.

HDMI 2.2 builds upon previous versions with increased bandwidth capabilities, enabling support for ultra-high resolutions and refresh rates. Devices using HDMI 2.2 can now handle resolutions up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz. It also supports uncompressed full chroma video formats, including 8K at 60Hz in 4:4:4 and 4K at 240Hz in 4:4:4 at both 10-bit and 12-bit colour depth.

The update also introduces the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), designed to enhance synchronisation between audio and video streams. This is especially useful in complex setups involving AV receivers or soundbars across multiple system hops.

A major highlight is the Ultra96 feature name, which device manufacturers can use to indicate support for maximum bandwidth capacities of 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps. These new capacities require the Ultra96 HDMI® Cable to ensure optimal performance, making cable identification and compatibility simpler for users.

The HDMI Forum has encouraged manufacturers to adopt the Ultra96 feature name and implement HDMI 2.2 in upcoming products. These cables will be part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program, which mandates testing and labelling for each model length. The Ultra96 HDMI Cable joins the existing Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable, which is certified for bandwidth up to 48Gbps.

Although specific product announcements have not yet been made, upcoming 8K and 12K televisions, high-end monitors, gaming consoles, and AV receivers are expected to integrate HDMI 2.2 soon. Consumers are advised to look for the Ultra96 branding to ensure full compatibility with the new specification.

With HDMI 2.2, the HDMI Forum aims to streamline user experience, improve audio-video performance, and set a foundation for the next generation of entertainment and computing devices.
