Google’s earthquake detection feature, which leverages motion sensors embedded in millions of Android devices, is now coming to wearables powered by Wear OS, as per Google System Release Notes. In 2020, it was initially released for Android smartphones in select countries, and the service has gradually expanded to more regions over the years, with India joining the list in 2023.
Google’s earthquake alerts will now be visible on Android smartwatches: Key details
Although Google has not announced the availability of this feature till now, folks at Android Authority have spotted the company adding earthquake alerts to Wear OS watches in Google's official release notes for the June 2025 Google Play services (v25.21) update. Once it is officially available for Wear OS watches, users will receive a warning when an earthquake is expected to cause shaking in their area. The alert will also show the magnitude and how far they are from the epicenter.
Depending on the severity of the earthquake, the alerts can also vary, with lighter shaking resulting in a simple warning that doesn’t disturb your current settings, while stronger shakes can trigger a louder alert with visual warnings, even if Do Not Disturb is turned on. This could give Wear OS smartwatch users enough time to get under a table, move away from a window, or just mentally prepare themselves before such a natural disaster, even when they are away from their phones.
However, there’s still no official word on when this feature will be available to Wear OS smartwatch users. The update notes do indicate that it's in the pipeline, and could be rolled out in the coming weeks or as a part of the upcoming Wear OS 6 release.
