Google recently introduced its flagship Pixel 10 series of smartphones at the Made by Google event, and now days after the launch, the tech giant has announced a key new feature for these handsets. Until now, smartphones with satellite connectivity were limited to emergency features like SOS alerts or location sharing. However, with the Pixel 10 series, Google is changing that, as the lineup becomes the first devices to support WhatsApp audio and video calls over satellite.
Pixel 10 series to support WhatsApp voice and video calls through satellite connectivity
Through a post on X, Google has announced that the Pixel 10 series will receive support for voice and video calls on WhatsApp over a satellite network beginning August 28. Interestingly, this date coincides with the first availability of the Pixel 10 series smartphones, post their preorders.
Moreover, the tech giant has posted a video, which tells us a bit more about how this feature works. It showcases a Pixel 10 handling a WhatsApp call while a satellite icon appears in the status bar. The clip then demonstrates how Pixel 10 users can answer calls without relying on a mobile network or internet connection.
However, the service will initially be supported by a select number of network operators. Google has also warned that additional charges may apply, and it is still unclear whether this feature will support WhatsApp text messages in the future. Regarding its availability, Google is expected to introduce the feature in the US region first, and then later in the coming years to other markets, including India.
