Gmail’s automated filters appear to be having an off day, with users across regions reporting that their inboxes are no longer being sorted correctly. Promotional emails and non-urgent updates are showing up in the primary inbox, while some messages are being flagged with warnings suggesting they were not properly scanned for spam or malware.
Google acknowledged the issue in a statement to Engadget and via its Workspace status dashboard, confirming that it is aware of the problem and actively working to resolve it. According to the company, the disruption has led to the misclassification of emails and the appearance of additional spam-related alerts across Gmail accounts.
Delayed emails and confusing spam warnings
Beyond cluttered inboxes, some users have also reported delays in receiving emails altogether. These delays have had knock-on effects, particularly for people trying to log in to services using two-factor authentication, where time-sensitive codes are arriving late or not at all.
Several users have noticed a prominent banner on certain emails reading, “Be careful with this message. Gmail hasn’t scanned this message for spam, unverified senders, or harmful software.” Google says these warnings are part of the broader filtering issue and not necessarily an indication that individual emails are unsafe.
In a statement to Engadget, a Google spokesperson reiterated the message posted on the status dashboard, saying the company is actively working on a fix and advising users to follow standard best practices when dealing with messages from unknown senders. That includes avoiding suspicious links and attachments until Gmail’s systems are fully back to normal.
There’s no official timeline yet for when the issue will be fully resolved. Until then, users may want to keep a closer eye on their inboxes and spam folders, especially if they’re expecting important or time-sensitive emails.
