Google CEO Sundar Pichai says company is boosting efforts to curb AI misuse with new detection tools

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has said that the company is stepping up efforts to prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence, calling it one of the most important responsibilities facing the tech industry today. In an interview with Fox News, Pichai explained that while AI continues to advance rapidly, it has also created opportunities for scams, misinformation and harmful manipulation. Google, he said, is now taking stronger steps to stay ahead of those risks.

Pichai pointed out that AI is not only a threat when misused, but also a powerful tool for defence. He said Google has been using its own AI models to identify scam calls, phishing attempts and other fraudulent behaviour. According to him, this technology recently helped the company win a major court case against a scam operator whose actions had affected more than a million people. He described this as an example of how AI can protect users when used responsibly.

One of the tools Pichai highlighted is Synth ID, a technology that can detect whether a video is real or AI-generated. With concerns rising about deepfakes, especially in political advertising and news content, Pichai said Synth ID can help people understand what they are watching and whether it has been artificially created. He believes such tools will become essential as AI-generated content becomes more realistic and harder to spot with the naked eye.

Pichai also said companies must “up our game” by building stronger safety and security frameworks around their AI systems. This includes testing models more thoroughly, building safeguards and ensuring responsible deployment at every stage.

Beyond individual companies, Pichai stressed the need for global cooperation. Countries, he said, must work together to prevent AI from being weaponised or used in dangerous ways. He also supports national-level regulation in the United States, warning that a patchwork of different state rules could slow innovation and make compliance difficult. Instead, he believes existing regulations in areas like healthcare can serve as a foundation for responsible AI use in different sectors.

Overall, Pichai’s message is clear: AI can transform industries and improve lives, but only if companies and governments take its risks seriously and build strong, unified protections around it.
