X has announced new safety restrictions for its AI assistant Grok, stating that the tool can no longer edit images of real people in bikinis or explicit attire. The update follows concerns around misuse of generative AI for creating or modifying sexualised images without consent. According to X, the changes are part of a broader effort to strengthen safeguards and ensure that AI-generated content aligns with its platform rules and local laws.
The announcement was shared through X’s Safety account, outlining both technical and policy-level updates aimed at reducing abuse while maintaining access to generative tools within defined limits.
Grok image generation policy changes
The company said it has implemented technological measures to block the Grok account from allowing edits to images of real individuals wearing revealing clothing, including bikinis. This restriction applies across user tiers, including paid subscribers. X reiterated that it maintains zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation material, non-consensual nudity, and unwanted sexual content, and that AI-generated outputs are subject to the same enforcement standards as user-posted content.
X also noted that it continues to remove violating content, suspend accounts where required, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies when necessary.
New image generation rules
Alongside content restrictions, X has narrowed access to Grok’s image creation and editing tools. Image generation via the Grok account on X is now limited to paid subscribers, a move the company says adds accountability. In addition, X has introduced geoblocking in jurisdictions where generating images of real people in bikinis, underwear, or similar attire is illegal. In those regions, users will be unable to use Grok for such outputs, regardless of subscription status.
These rules do not replace existing platform policies. All prompts and AI-generated content must continue to comply with X Rules.
How it changes Grok
For users, the update means Grok’s image capabilities are more restricted when real people are involved. Requests to edit images into sexualised or revealing contexts will be blocked, and image features are increasingly tied to paid access and regional laws. For X, the changes signal a tighter approach to AI moderation, focusing on consent, legality, and platform accountability while keeping Grok available for permitted creative and informational use.
