Apple has refreshed its most affordable iPhone with the launch of the iPhone 17e, keeping the starting price unchanged while introducing a few meaningful upgrades over last year’s iPhone 16e.
At first glance, the differences may seem subtle. But under the surface, there are some notable changes — particularly in performance, storage and wireless charging.
Design and display
The most visible update is a new pink colour option, joining the existing finishes. While design dimensions remain identical at 5.78 x 2.82 x 0.31 inches, the iPhone 17e is marginally heavier at 5.96 ounces compared to the iPhone 16e’s 5.88 ounces — a difference unlikely to be noticeable in daily use.
Durability gets a boost with Ceramic Shield 2 on the iPhone 17e. Apple says the updated glass offers three times better scratch resistance than the previous-generation Ceramic Shield used on the iPhone 16e.
The display itself remains unchanged. Both models feature a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel with 1,200 nits peak brightness and a resolution of 2,532 x 1,170 at 460 pixels per inch. In practical terms, that means similar brightness, colour accuracy and sharpness across both devices.
Cameras
Camera hardware also remains largely the same. Both devices use Apple’s 48-megapixel Fusion 2-in-1 camera system with a 12MP 2x Telephoto option and up to 10x digital zoom. Image quality continues to deliver strong detail and vibrant colours in good lighting conditions.
However, there is a meaningful software improvement. The iPhone 17e now supports enhanced Portrait mode that can recognize pets such as dogs and cats. It also captures depth information automatically, allowing users to convert standard photos into portraits after they are taken — something the iPhone 16e struggled with, particularly for non-human subjects.
The 12MP TrueDepth front camera remains unchanged and continues to offer reliable selfie and video call performance.
Processor, storage and battery
The biggest upgrade comes in performance. The iPhone 17e is powered by Apple’s A19 chip, compared to the A18 chip in the iPhone 16e. While the performance gap is not dramatic, benchmark data suggests roughly a 5 percent improvement in CPU speed and over 10 percent better GPU performance.
For casual users, the difference may not be immediately noticeable. However, power users running demanding apps or AI-driven features may benefit from the added headroom.
Storage is another key upgrade. The iPhone 17e now starts with double the base storage compared to its predecessor, offering more room for photos, apps and videos without paying extra.
Battery life remains the same on paper. Apple claims up to 26 hours of video playback and 21 hours of streamed video on both models. Reports suggest both devices use a 4,005mAh battery.
Charging, however, sees a welcome improvement. The iPhone 17e supports Qi2 wireless charging at up to 15W — double the 7.5W wireless charging speed supported by the iPhone 16e.
iOS and Apple Intelligence
Both models support iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence features. While the software experience is similar, the newer A19 chip in the iPhone 17e is expected to handle AI tasks more efficiently, offering slightly better responsiveness for on-device processing.
The bottom line
The iPhone 17e is not a radical overhaul, but it refines the formula. With a faster chip, double the starting storage, improved Portrait capabilities and faster wireless charging — all at the same price — it presents a modest yet practical upgrade over the iPhone 16e.
For iPhone 16e users, the jump may not feel essential. But for those coming from older models, the iPhone 17e offers a more future-ready entry point into Apple’s ecosystem.
