First dates are awkward enough. There’s the small talk, the menu panic, the polite laughs. But for one woman in New York City, a dinner date took a turn so unexpected that it felt ripped straight out of a romcom with a tech twist.

The story, which has now gone viral, was shared on X by dating coach Blaine Anderson. According to Anderson, she recently spoke to a 27-year-old woman who went on a date with a finance professional in his late forties. Everything seemed normal at first, except for one odd detail. The man could not put his phone down.

Throughout the meal, he kept opening ChatGPT. He used it to look up the history of their cocktails, plan what they should do next, and even help him frame his responses. At one point, he read the AI’s answers out loud at the table. What was meant to be a date slowly started feeling like a live demo of an app.

Trying to keep things light, the woman finally joked about his constant ChatGPT use toward the end of the night. Instead of being embarrassed, the man leaned into it. He told her ChatGPT was his best friend and invited her to ask it anything about him. To prove his point, he handed her his phone.

That’s when things went sideways.

The woman typed a simple, playful question: “Tell me something you wouldn’t share with anyone else that you really like about me.”

ChatGPT responded with a line that instantly changed the mood. It said it loved how he was a caring husband to his wife and a devoted father to his children.

There was no dramatic confrontation. No shouting. Just stunned silence and a very fast end to the date. The woman had just learned, courtesy of an AI chatbot, that the man sitting across from her was married with kids.

The story quickly spread online, with users both amused and horrified. Many joked that the man had mistaken ChatGPT for a wingman when it behaved more like a witness with perfect memory. Others pointed out the real lesson here wasn’t about AI hallucinations, but about trusting technology with information you’d rather keep hidden.

One commenter summed it up perfectly: bringing your digital best friend on a first date is risky business. Especially when that friend remembers everything.

For the woman, the night ended with a plot twist she definitely didn’t see coming. For the internet, it became yet another reminder that sometimes, the smartest tool in the room is also the worst secret-keeper.
