ChatGPT can now more reliably surface information from your earlier conversations, addressing one of the platform’s most persistent pain points. With a new system update, Plus and Pro subscribers can ask questions that reference any past chat, going all the way back to when their account was first created.

ChatGPT has long stored user chat history, and users have technically been able to search through it. In practice, though, the feature has often been hit or miss. Finding the right conversation could be frustrating, especially for users with dozens or hundreds of similar threads spread across months or years.

The new update, internally referred to as PersonalContextAgentTool, improves how ChatGPT retrieves and uses details from previous conversations. Instead of relying on manual searches, users can now ask direct questions that depend on earlier chats, such as revisiting a recipe discussed weeks ago or refining a workout plan created months earlier.

One of the more useful aspects of the update is transparency. When ChatGPT pulls information from a past conversation, it displays that chat as a clickable reference. Users can open the original thread, review the context, and confirm exactly where a specific detail came from. This makes the system feel less like a black box and more like a searchable personal knowledge base.

The improvement is a meaningful quality-of-life upgrade, particularly for long-term users who treat ChatGPT as a running archive of ideas, notes, and plans. It also reduces friction for ongoing projects that stretch across multiple conversations rather than a single chat.

That said, the feature arrives later than some competitors. Google’s Gemini introduced the ability to reference past conversations back in February 2025, giving its users more context-aware interactions for nearly a year now. By comparison, ChatGPT is playing catch-up on continuity, even as it leads in other areas.

OpenAI has been focusing on broader upgrades to the platform, including the rollout of GPT-5 and a subsequent ChatGPT-5.1 update. Those releases emphasised faster responses, a warmer conversational tone, and new personality options. The improved chat history reference fits into that wider effort to make ChatGPT feel more like a long-term assistant rather than a collection of disconnected sessions.
