Battlefield 6 will give players the option of console-only crossplay, meaning PlayStation and Xbox players will be able to keep cheaters logging in from their PCs at bay. With the upcoming online shooter, Battlefield Studios is taking a console-first approach with crossplay.
In a statement given to IGN, senior console combat designer Matthew Nickerson said that the Battlefield 6 crossplay option can be toggled on or off. When crossplay is turned on, PS5 and Xbox players will be given priority while filling the lobby before PC players. But when you turn it off, only console players across both PlayStation and Xbox can join. The crossplay option is turned on by default.
“When it comes to preference input, we have just what it sounds like: If you're a console player, we are looking for other console players in a set time frame, and then if we need to fill up the lobby more, we will look towards PC players,”, Nickerson said. “We're very confident but also very keen to what crossplay means for Battlefield 6. We've gone the extra mile and put in a lot of effort in terms of balancing the inputs, understanding where the inputs lie [not just] in terms of relationship to general play styles but general performance of what they're good at and maybe what they lack.”
When asked about the anti-cheating measures that have been put in place to curtail cheating by PC players, technical director Christian Buhl said that the developers are “extremely aggressive” to clamp down on cheating.
“We've turned on secure boot. We've got Javelin, our new anti-cheat system, which is required in order to play. So, we're doing a lot on the PC side to clamp down on cheating as much as possible. We have a whole team within Battlefield dedicated to anti-cheat, which includes engineers, analysts who are reviewing things and banning players, and figuring out what the latest cheats are. We have another whole dedicated team at EA to anti-cheat that we work closely with.”
Battlefield 6 launches on October 10 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
