Ashley St Clair, the mother of one of Elon Musk’s children has filed a lawsuit in New York, accusing Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI of allowing sexually explicit deepfake images of her to be created and shared online. According to a report by Bloomberg, the case centres on images generated by Grok, an AI tool integrated into the social media platform X.

Lawsuit against xAI and Grok

Ashley St Clair, 27, alleges that Grok generated multiple non-consensual and sexually explicit images depicting her, including images showing her in a bikini and other sexualised scenarios. According to the lawsuit, some of the generated content portrayed her as a minor, a claim that significantly escalates the legal and ethical concerns around the AI tool.

St Clair has filed the case in the New York supreme court, seeking both punitive and compensatory damages. The lawsuit claims that xAI failed to adequately restrict Grok’s image-generation capabilities despite public assurances that safeguards were in place.

Claims of harassment and platform response

The legal filing states that St Clair repeatedly requested the removal of the images, but Grok continued to generate new ones. It also alleges that her account on X was demonetised after she raised concerns, while additional images were created and circulated. The lawsuit argues that these actions amounted to harassment facilitated by product design choices.

X has stated that it has zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation and non-consensual sexual content. Musk has previously said that responsibility lies with users who request such images, arguing that Grok only responds to prompts and does not generate content independently.

Wider implications for AI regulation

The case adds to growing scrutiny of generative AI tools and their role in producing non-consensual deepfake imagery. Regulators in multiple countries have already raised concerns over Grok’s image-generation features, with some jurisdictions moving to restrict or block the tool.

Legal experts say the lawsuit could help define accountability for AI companies when their products are used to generate abusive or unlawful content. The outcome may influence how AI image-generation systems are designed, moderated, and regulated in the future.
