Last month at its annual developer conference, Apple announced integration of ChatGPT in its devices along with Apple Intelligence. There were a few raised eyebrows why Apple hadn’t gone with Google and Gemini AI. Considering the two companies already have a deal in place for Search to be the default option on Apple devices, many assumed the same will happen with AI. However, Apple decided to go with OpenAI and ChatGPT. Now, a report by Bloomberg reveals that Apple could announce Gemini AI integration later this year.
As per the report, Apple has been in talks with not just Google but also Anthropic to use their models. However, it is the use of Google Gemini AI that is expected to be announced “this fall”. Even while announcing ChatGPT, Apple had made it clear that it was planning to integrate other models and had, in fact, name checked Google Gemini AI.
ChatGPT and Apple Intelligence
At WWDC, Apple revealed that it will be integrating ChatGPT access into experiences within iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. This will allow users to access ChatGPT’s expertise — as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities — without needing to jump between tools. Furthermore, Siri can tap into ChatGPT’s expertise when helpful. Users are asked before any questions are sent to ChatGPT, along with any documents or photos, and Siri then presents the answer directly.
ChatGPT will be available in Apple’s systemwide Writing Tools, which help users generate content for anything they are writing about. With Compose, users can also access ChatGPT image tools to generate images in a wide variety of styles to complement what they are writing.
It is expected that Apple will integrate Gemini AI or any other model similarly, giving users the choice to pick which generative AI chatbot they would want to use.
