Apple has expanded its display portfolio with the launch of a refreshed Studio Display and an all-new Studio Display XDR, aimed at everyone from everyday Mac users to high-end creative professionals.
The updated Studio Display retains its 27-inch 5K Retina panel with 5120x2880 resolution, over 14 million pixels, 600 nits of brightness and P3 wide colour support. What changes this time are the features around it. The monitor now includes a 12MP Center Stage camera with improved image quality and Desk View support, a studio-quality three-microphone array and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio. Apple says the four force-cancelling woofers deliver 30 per cent deeper bass than before.
Connectivity also gets a serious bump. The Studio Display now supports Thunderbolt 5, allowing users to daisy-chain up to four displays for nearly 60 million pixels of combined workspace. It also includes two additional USB-C ports for peripherals and charging. Using the included Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable, the display can deliver up to 96W of power — enough to fast-charge a 14-inch MacBook Pro.
The bigger headline, however, is the Studio Display XDR. Also a 27-inch 5K panel, it upgrades to a mini-LED backlight system with 2,304 local dimming zones. The result is up to 1000 nits of sustained SDR brightness and 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, alongside a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Apple claims this setup virtually eliminates blooming while delivering deeper blacks and brighter highlights.
The Studio Display XDR also introduces a 120Hz refresh rate with Adaptive Sync, dynamically adjusting between 47Hz and 120Hz depending on content. For video editors, animators and even gamers, that translates into smoother motion and lower latency.
Colour accuracy is another focus. In addition to P3 wide colour, the XDR model supports Adobe RGB and covers more than 80 per cent of the Rec. 2020 colour space for HDR workflows. Both P3 and Adobe RGB are accessible from the same preset, making it easier for professionals switching between colour spaces.
Like the standard model, Studio Display XDR includes a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, directional beamforming microphones and a six-speaker system with Spatial Audio. It also acts as a Thunderbolt hub, offering two Thunderbolt 5 ports and two additional USB-C ports. Charging output goes up to 140W, which is sufficient to fast-charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro.
Pricing and availability
The standard Studio Display starts at Rs 1,89,900 (Rs 1,77,900 for education), while Studio Display XDR starts at Rs 3,99,900 (Rs 3,87,900 for education). Both are available in standard or nano-texture glass options. Pre-orders begin March 4, with availability starting March 11.
