Apple is reportedly working on an AI-powered wearable pin, according to a report by The Information. The device, still under development, is expected to be a clip-on accessory designed to be worn on clothing. If it reaches the market, it would mark Apple’s first major move into standalone AI hardware beyond existing products like the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. The development is said to be linked to Apple’s broader push around on-device and cloud-based artificial intelligence.
The wearable is described as a thin, flat, circular pin made of aluminium and glass. Engineers are reportedly aiming for a size close to an AirTag, though slightly thicker. The device is expected to attach magnetically to clothing and include a physical button for basic controls. Unlike a smartwatch or earbuds, the pin would not rely on a display, instead focusing on voice, audio, and camera-based interaction.
Reports suggest the Apple AI pin could include two cameras, one standard and one wide-angle, enabling image capture and video recording. It is also said to feature three microphones to support voice commands and contextual awareness. A built-in speaker would handle audio responses, while charging may be handled through a strip similar to those used on fitness trackers. These hardware choices indicate the device is designed for continuous ambient use rather than occasional interaction.
AI features and use cases
The wearable is expected to rely heavily on Apple’s AI systems, potentially integrating tightly with iPhones and other Apple devices. Possible use cases include voice-based assistance, quick queries, notifications, and contextual reminders. The cameras and microphones could allow the device to understand surroundings, though how Apple handles privacy and data processing remains a key question. Apple has historically emphasised on-device processing, and a similar approach may be applied here.
The report suggests Apple may be targeting a potential launch as early as 2027, with internal discussions reportedly mentioning production volumes of up to 20 million units. The move comes as competition in AI hardware increases, with other companies also exploring screen-free AI devices. However, earlier attempts in this category have struggled with adoption, raising questions about consumer demand.
Apple has not officially confirmed the product, and details around pricing, availability, and final features remain unknown. Whether consumers will see clear value in an AI wearable pin is yet to be determined, making this one of Apple’s more closely watched hardware experiments.
