
Anthropic has entered the healthcare AI race with the launch of Claude for Healthcare, a suite of tools designed for medical providers, insurance payers, and patients. The announcement comes shortly after OpenAI revealed ChatGPT Health, signalling that large AI labs now see healthcare as one of the most important, and sensitive, frontiers for consumer and enterprise AI.
At a basic level, Claude for Healthcare mirrors some of what ChatGPT Health is offering. Users will be able to sync health data from phones, smartwatches, and other platforms. Like OpenAI, Anthropic has stressed that this data will not be used to train its models, an assurance clearly aimed at calming privacy and compliance concerns in a tightly regulated industry.
Where Anthropic is trying to differentiate itself is in focus and scope. ChatGPT Health, at least in its early form, appears centred on the patient experience, acting as a conversational interface for people to discuss symptoms, track health data, and ask general questions. Claude for Healthcare, by contrast, is being positioned as a back-office workhorse for the healthcare system.
A key part of that pitch is Claude’s new “connectors”, which allow the model to pull information directly from established medical and administrative databases. These include the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Coverage Database, ICD-10 diagnostic codes, the National Provider Identifier Standard, and PubMed. By grounding responses in these sources, Anthropic hopes to make Claude more useful for research, documentation, and compliance-heavy tasks.
One example Anthropic highlighted is prior authorisation, the process where doctors submit detailed paperwork to insurers to secure approval for treatments or medications. This is widely seen as one of the most frustrating parts of modern healthcare. According to Anthropic chief product officer Mike Krieger, clinicians often spend more time dealing with documentation than actually seeing patients. Automating large parts of that workflow is an obvious target for AI.
That said, the company is not pretending Claude will stay away from medical advice entirely. Like ChatGPT, Claude is already being used by people to discuss health-related questions. OpenAI has claimed that around 230 million people talk about their health with ChatGPT each week, and Anthropic is clearly aware of similar behaviour on its own platform.
The risk, as critics often point out, is hallucination. Large language models can sound confident while being wrong, a dangerous trait in healthcare. Both Anthropic and OpenAI continue to emphasise that their tools are not substitutes for trained professionals and that users should seek medical advice from qualified clinicians.
