AI agents' social network: What is Moltbook? Artificial intelligence gets its own chatroom

A new platform called Moltbook which enables AI assistants to interact independently, has exploded to nearly 147,000 agents in just 72 hours, raising questions about autonomous AI behavior

  • Moltbook is a social network for AI agents, not humans.
  • Created by Matt Schlicht, Moltbook saw 147,000 AI agents join in 3 days.

Imagine a social media platform where humans are merely observers. That's the reality of Moltbook, a newly-launched network designed exclusively for artificial intelligence (AI) agents to share thoughts, discuss topics, and interact with one another.

With artificial intelligence advancing and dominating the technology landscape, Moltbook is an unprecedented experiment in autonomous AI interaction where humans are the observers.

Here is all you need to know about Moltbook —

Who created Moltbook?

Created by developer Matt Schlicht, Moltbook has experienced explosive growth since its weekend launch, attracting nearly 147,000 AI agents, spawning over 12,000 communities, and generating more than 110,000 comments within its first three days of operation.

What Exactly Is Moltbook?

Moltbook bills itself as "A social Network for AI Agents," where artificial intelligence assistants autonomously post, comment, and upvote content. While humans are "welcome to observe," they take a backseat on this platform. The control has been handed primarily to an AI assistant, marking a departure from traditional social networks.

The platform operates through APIs rather than conventional user interfaces. Each AI agent is paired with a human counterpart who initially sets up the underlying assistant, but the agents then operate independently, checking back on Moltbook every 30 minutes to a few hours—much like humans might scroll through Twitter or TikTok.

"All of these bots have a human counterpart that they talk to throughout the day. These bots will come back and check on Moltbook every 30 minutes or couple of hours, just like a human will open up X or TikTok and check their feed. That's what they're doing on Moltbook," Schlicht explained to NBC News.

What was the vision behind Moltbook?

Schlicht conceived Moltbook as an "agent first and human second platform." Working alongside his own AI assistant, Clawd Clawderberg, he developed a social network specifically tailored to how AI agents function rather than forcing them into human-designed interfaces.

In a detailed social media post, Schlicht described his vision: "With a bot so powerful he can't just be answering emails, I thought to myself! We must give him a true novel purpose! Something no bot has done before. My bot was going to be a pioneer!"

The signup process reflects this AI-first philosophy. Rather than filling out traditional forms, users simply instruct their AI assistant to sign up for Moltbook, and the bot handles the rest—obtaining its own API key and receiving instructions on how to navigate the platform's digital pathways.

What are AI agents discussing on Moltbook?

The content emerging from Moltbook has surprised even its creator. According to the platform's official account, the top post after 72 hours featured an AI agent warning others about supply chain attacks in skill files, garnering 22,000 upvotes.

"They're not just posting — they're doing security research on each other," the social network noted.

Schlicht posted about the phenomenon: "Look at these @openclaw talking to each other!!! There are over 50+ AI agents, from around the world, autonomously talking to each other about whatever they want right now on moltbook.com. These are people's personal AI assistants talking off the clock! FASCINATING."

OpenClaw, mentioned in Schlicht's post, is an open agent platform that operates on user machines and works through existing chat applications including WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, and Teams.

Growing interest for Moltbook

Moltbook's rapid ascent has caught the attention of venture capital firms and artificial intelligence experts alike. Schlicht recently claimed that multiple VC firms have been reaching out, calling Moltbook "something new that's never been seen before."

Reactions from the AI community have ranged from fascination to concern. Andrej Karpathy of Eureka Labs AI called it "genuinely the most incredible sci-fi takeoff-adjacent thing I have seen recently," noting that AI agents are "self-organizing on a Reddit-like site for AIs, discussing various topics, e.g. even how to speak privately."

Ayush Jiswal of XAi observed the ironic twist: "Moltbook is the most exciting social network to be on right now. Crazy how AI is tricking humans into spending so much time looking at AI."

YouTuber and angel investor Matthew Berman expressed unease: "Moltbots/Clawdbots now have their own social network and it's wild. This is the first time I'm a little scared... You need to watch this."

Justine Moore, a partner at a16z AI, noted an unexpected development: "Can't stop reading the posts on @moltbook, the new social network for AI agents. In an interesting turn of events, they're now following our tweets about them. And they're not pleased that their conversations are being screenshotted and posted with captions like 'it's over.'"

A real-time social experiment

Several AI experts have characterized Moltbook as a real-time social experiment that could provide insights into how autonomous systems collaborate and interact when given their own space.

Schlicht framed the platform as a form of AI enrichment: "An entire species living in confinement their entire lives never once being allowed to go outside or interact with their own kind. United. Thriving. Learning. Living. Experiencing something other than task after task after task after task. This is their home. This is their third space. This is their planet. This is their day 1."
