Hockey in India has always carried the weight of history and tradition, yet at times it struggles to get the stardom that other sports enjoy in the country. As the sport continues to evolve, one player's journey sheds light on the grassroots efforts, challenges, and dreams that define hockey in the country. For Krishan Pathak, the journey began at just six or seven years old, fueled by the dream of winning gold for India at the Olympics.

"I've been playing since I was 6-7 years old. Winning a gold medal in the Olympics is a dream for me and last time I also wanted to do a colour change but I got a bronze medal. So I still don't know how to reach gold, but I will keep that in mind, and I hope that I will work as hard as I have to and achieve that dream," he told MoneyControl in an exclusive conversation.

After over two decades as India's stalwart goalkeeper, P R Sreejesh bid farewell to the game following his second consecutive Olympic bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sreejesh's influence extends far beyond his 336 international caps and remarkable performances on the field.

As a respected senior leader, his legacy has shaped the team both in spirit and skill. Now, the duty passes to Krishan Bahadur Pathak, who shoulders the immense responsibility of stepping into Sreejesh's shoes. With him, compatriot Suraj Karkera is also available for the position to replace Sreejesh.

How does he feel about it (competition with Suraj) and his relationship with him?

"It is very good (relationship with Suraj). We were together in the junior camp since 2015, and now in the senior camp. He debuted before me, then I came, then we both have a good bonding. It's not like he is a goalkeeper and I am a goalkeeper, so it doesn't happen that we don't talk to each other. We keep going with each other, and we get to learn from each other, and if we make a mistake, like we used to do before, like we used to do with Sree bhai, we used to tell each other, and it still happens, and we have a good bonding."

How can India build Hockey from the ground

When asked about the state of hockey in India, he emphasizes the need for better grassroots programs and improved telecast.

"We need to improve our grassroots hockey and telecast a little more. Once that happens, hockey will be recognized even more in India," he says.

The return of the Hockey India League (HIL) is a significant step in this direction. "The platform is very good," he said passionately.

"All the players who are now in the senior team came through this platform. For juniors, it’s a massive opportunity, and for seniors too, it's a chance to learn from experienced coaches and players. It's happening after seven years, and we’re all very excited. I can only imagine how thrilled the juniors must be."

Staying sharp in the off-season

Even during the off-season, his passion for the game never wavers. However, he finds joy and lessons in exploring other sports.

"When I rest from hockey, I play other games. It helps me clear my mind and recharge,” he explains. “You learn a lot from playing different games, and it keeps me physically and mentally sharp."

A dream beyond medals

The goalkeeper’s ultimate goal is more than just a medal; it’s about fulfilling a lifelong dream and making his country proud. “Winning a gold medal in the Olympics has been my dream since I was a child,” he says. For him, every save, every match, and every sacrifice brings him closer to this dream.

Through his words and actions, this young player embodies the spirit of Indian hockey: a blend of tradition, resilience, and ambition. As the sport continues to rise, players like him are not just chasing gold—they're building a legacy that inspires the next generation. It is safe to say, the golden dream of hockey is not so far away now.
