India captain Shubman Gill hammered his tenth century in Test cricket during the second Test match against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday.

Since he was appointed captain of the longest format, he has been scoring runs for fun. With his latest century, Gill broke several records as the Test captain and set a new record for India in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC).

The 26-year-old currently holds the record for most centuries in Indian WTC history. He surpassed Rohit Sharma, who retired earlier this year, who finished with nine WTC hundreds, with his tenth century against the West Indies in Delhi.

Shubman Gill also broke the record for most century as captain in a year, matching Virat Kohli's record for India. As of 2025, Gill has hit five tons, whilst Kohli has accomplished this incredible feat twice in his career. As Test captain, he recorded four tons in 2016 and five hundreds in 2017 and 2018.  The years 2016–2018 were when Kohli's batting performance was at its peak.

Gill also outperformed Sachin Tendulkar, who had achieved four hundreds in 1997 while serving as captain of India's Test team.

Not just that, Gill scored his fifth Test hundred in just 12 innings as captain — only Alastair Cook (nine innings) and Sunil Gavaskar (10 innings) reached the milestone faster.

As captain, Gill registered his fifth century in the World Test Championship, surpassing Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who had four tons as skipper in the format. England’s Joe Root leads the list overall with eight centuries as captain.
