DC vs SRH IPL 2024: Gavaskar’s inspirational message to Pant after Sunrisers thrash Delhi Capitals

DC vs SRH IPL 2024: "I never want your head down, there are lots of games. So, keep a smile always", said legend Sunil Gavaskar to Rishabh Pant after their loss to Sunrisers.

On Saturday, Rishabh Pant appeared visibly disheartened. And rightly so. His team had just suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of SunRisers Hyderabad, enduring a staggering 67-run loss after conceding 266/7 in 20 overs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Facing a daunting target, DC was all out for 199, marking their fifth loss in eight games and leaving them positioned seventh in the 10-team league. DC's performance this season has been inconsistent, oscillating between highs and lows. With the IPL reaching its halfway point, DC's path to the playoffs has significantly toughened.

Reflecting on the defeat, Rishabh Pant highlighted the significance of the powerplay, during which SRH amassed a record-breaking 125 runs, with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma delivering exceptional performances. "I think the powerplay was the turning point. We were constantly playing catch-up throughout the match. That made a significant difference. Hopefully, we will return with a clearer mindset and strategy," expressed Pant, whose return to Delhi was overshadowed by Head and Sharma's formidable 131-run partnership.

Additionally, Pant admitted to possibly misjudging the dew factor at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, leading to the decision to field first after winning the toss. "The main idea behind that decision was our anticipation of dew, but it didn't materialize. I thought if we could limit them to 220-230 runs, we would still stand a chance," he elaborated.

Observing Pant's despondency after the match, Sunil Gavaskar, one of the commentators, offered words of encouragement: "I never want to see your spirits down; there are many games ahead. So, keep smiling always." Pant responded affirmatively, pledging to do his best.

Despite only claiming one wicket, SRH bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar's economical spell in the high-scoring encounter—yielding 33 runs in 4 overs—played a crucial role in securing an easy victory. "I feel good about my performance. Although I didn't take many wickets, I executed my plans effectively. It's just a matter of time," expressed the pace-bowling stalwart.

Reflecting on the strategy in defending a substantial total, Bhuvneshwar emphasized the importance of executing plans, even if it meant conceding runs. He also commended fellow pacer T Natarajan's exceptional bowling, which nearly resulted in a hat-trick and culminated in impressive figures of 4/19 in four overs. "Natarajan's performance was outstanding. We all know his proficiency with yorkers. He quietly puts in the hard work and often goes unnoticed. Yet, we recognize his crucial role for Sunrisers," Bhuvneshwar praised.

Moreover, Bhuvneshwar expressed satisfaction with SRH's batting unit finally finding form after years of inconsistency. "For the first time in many years, our batting lineup is performing exceptionally well. As a bowling unit, we are content to take a back seat. They are truly dominating... when we defend scores around 180, it feels like a manageable target," he concluded.
