Team India scripted history at Edgbaston, Birmingham, registering a thumping 336-run win over England in the second match of the ongoing five-Test series. After losing the series opener in Leeds, India made a brilliant comeback to level the series 1-1, with three matches still to go.
This was also the first win for India’s new Test captain, Shubman Gill, and he was named Player of the Match for his remarkable batting in both innings. He scored 269 in the first and 161 in the second.

Shubman Gill’s performance broke several records:
Second batter ever to score 150+ in both innings of a Test (after Allan Border).
Second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to hit a double century and a century in the same Test.
430 aggregate runs – now second-highest in a single Test (behind Graham Gooch’s 456 in 1990).
Three centuries in his first three innings as Test captain – joint record with Virat Kohli.
Most runs (585) in a maiden Test series as India’s captain already (Kohli had 449 in 2014/15 in Australia).
India dominated with the bat in both innings: First innings: 587 all out and Second innings: 427/6 declared.
Aggregate of 1014 runs – fourth-highest total by a team in Test history
Vice-captain Rishabh Pant smashed 65 off 58 in the second innings, including 8 fours and 3 sixes. He broke a unique record:
Most sixes by any batter in an away country in Tests – 24 sixes in England (Previous best: Ben Stokes – 21 in South Africa)
In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep delivered a stunning performance:
Took four wickets in the first innings and six in the second
Became only the second Indian pacer to take a 10-wicket match haul in England (After Chetan Sharma in 1986 – also at Edgbaston)
England also saw some records fall, especially due to the 303-run sixth-wicket stand between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith:
India became the only team to concede 300+ runs for the 6th wicket three times in Tests
Jamie Smith scored 184* – highest ever by an England wicketkeeper in Tests
Reached his century in 80 balls – joint-third fastest by an England batter in Tests
Scored 88 in the second innings – his aggregate of 272 runs is now the third-highest for a wicketkeeper in a single Test
This was India’s first-ever Test win in Birmingham (in 9 attempts: 7 losses, 1 draw)
It is now India’s fourth-biggest win by runs in Tests, biggest win by runs in England, biggest win by runs in any SENA country (Surpassing 295-run win in Perth, 2024)
