The newly appointed India head coach Gautam Gambhir conducted his inaugural press conference on Monday, covering several pivotal topics. He stressed the significance of managing workload for premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah, whom he hailed as a 'rare bowler.'
Gambhir's tenure officially commences with India's tour of Sri Lanka, kicking off on Saturday in Pallekele, featuring three T20 Internationals and three ODIs.
"I've mentioned before, workload management for someone like Jasprit Bumrah is crucial. He is a rare bowler that any team would cherish. You want him to be available for crucial matches. That's why workload management is important, not just for him but for fast bowlers in general," Gambhir remarked during the press conference.
Bumrah's consistent value to the Indian team has been underscored by his stellar performances at the 2023 ODI World Cup and his historic contributions to the victorious T20 World Cup campaign.
Gambhir also touched upon the broader issue of workload management for fast bowlers while outlining a different approach for batsmen.
"If you are a batsman in good form, you might as well play across all formats. Rohit and Virat have retired from T20Is, so they will now focus on two formats. Hopefully, they will be available for most of the matches," Gambhir added.
The new head coach's comments reflect his strategic outlook as he assumes leadership of the team and prepares for the upcoming series in Sri Lanka.
