Astronomers predict an imminent "once-in-a-lifetime" nova explosion visible to the naked eye, creating excitement among skywatchers worldwide.

T Coronae Borealis, also known as the "Blaze Star," is a fascinating star system located 3,000 light-years away in the constellation of the Northern Crown, west of Hercules. This system includes a hot red giant star and a cool white dwarf star. Known for its recurring nova explosions every 79 to 80 years, the Blaze Star last erupted in 1946. NASA predicts another explosion is likely before September 2024.

Where and When to Look
The Blaze Star can be found between the bright stars Vega and Arcturus. When the explosion occurs, it will be one of the brightest stars in the sky. Bradley Schaefer, a physics and astronomy professor at Louisiana State University, urges everyone to look up and witness this rare event. "When it happens, it will be magnificent," Schaefer said, emphasising the spectacle's rarity and brightness.

The Imminent Explosion
Although the exact timing is uncertain, historical patterns and recent observations suggest the explosion is imminent. The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) reported a "pre-eruption dip" in brightness for T Coronae Borealis in March 2023. Such dips often indicate that a nova explosion is about a year away.

A Spectacular Sight
Normally too dim to see with the naked eye, the Blaze Star's brightness will surge from magnitude +10 to magnitude +2 during the explosion, making it visible without telescopes. Schaefer, who has studied this star system for decades, compares the explosion's power to a hydrogen bomb, highlighting the incredible forces at play far above our heads.

Nova vs. Supernova
NASA explains that in a recurring nova like T Coronae Borealis, the white dwarf star survives the explosion. In contrast, a supernova results in the complete destruction of a dying star in one final eruption.

This rare astronomical event offers a unique opportunity to witness the immense power of the cosmos. Keep your eyes on the sky and be prepared for a breathtaking celestial show!
