A dramatic event occurred in northern San Sebastian Bay, Argentina, where 26 orcas were found washed up dead. The unusual mass stranding has been puzzling scientists across the globe and they are seeking to understand what happened.
What type of orcas were involved?
Marine biologists from the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and the Southern Centre for Scientific Investigation (CADIC) began investigating immediately. The team first spotted two ecotype D orcas in the bay before discovering the remaining carcasses.
“Once there, the team verified that they were ecotype D orcas. The total now stands at 26,” a statement reported by The Independent confirmed. Ecotype D orcas are identified by a small eye patch, rounder heads, and a faint dorsal patch.
This is the third-largest orca stranding ever recorded worldwide. These strandings are very rare, and this incident is especially worrying for researchers.
How are scientists investigating the cause?
Scientists are present, taking biological samples, assessing for possible injury, and monitoring environmental factors. The research seeks to establish if the stranding was natural or indicates shifts in the marine ecosystem. Autopsies performed thus far were found to indicate no trauma or injury in the killer whales.
Earlier mass orca strandings were reported in 1955 at Paraparaumu Beach, New Zealand, where 17 died, and in 2022 in the Strait of Magellan, where nine orcas were dead.
Why are killer whales so vital to the ocean?
Killer whales, also known as orcas, are apex predators and key indicators of marine health. They are the largest members of the dolphin family and are easily recognised by their black-and-white colouring.
Orcas hunt in a group, sometimes up to 40 in number, employing coordinated methods akin to wolf packs. They feed on a variety of foods, such as fish, penguins, and sea lions, making them one of the ocean's most lethal predators.
Scientists expect their ongoing research to shed light on the reasons behind these rare ecotype D orcas' deaths. The discovery may offer vital information regarding ocean well-being and the possible impact of environmental shifts on sea creatures.
