A remarkable Laysan albatross, Wisdom, continues to astound researchers. At 74 years old, she is preparing to hatch another chick.
Wisdom laid an egg on 27 November at Midway Atoll. This Pacific island has been her nesting site for decades. Scientists believe the egg will hatch within two months.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service estimates Wisdom has raised 30 chicks. Her last known chick hatched in 2021, and researchers continue to marvel at her longevity.
Jonathan Plissner, a wildlife biologist, highlighted Wisdom’s unique survival. "Birds of her age rarely lay eggs. Most albatrosses live about 30 years," he said. The second-oldest albatross on the island is 45 years old.
Researchers tracked Wisdom returning to Midway Atoll on 26 November. This island, 1,930km northwest of Honolulu, was a key site during World War II. Upon arrival, she was seen interacting with a new mate.

While albatrosses usually mate for life, Wisdom has outlived at least three partners. Her previous mate, Akeakamai, has not been seen in recent years. Her new partner is now caring for the egg while she returns to sea.
Marine ecologist Carl Safina commended Wisdom’s resilience amidst growing challenges. Albatrosses face threats from plastic pollution and rising sea levels. Despite these dangers, Wisdom has laid an estimated 50-60 eggs since 1956.
"Her ability to breed at this age is extraordinary," Safina said. Researchers remain hopeful this egg will add to her incredible legacy.
