  • Daylight-Saving Time starts March 8, 2026, in US and Canada.
  • Clocks move forward one hour, bringing longer evening daylight.
  • Europe changes clocks later, on March 29, 2026.

Millions of people across North America will soon lose an hour of sleep as clocks move forward to mark the start of Daylight-Saving Time. The seasonal time change will begin on March 8, 2026, when clocks in the United States and Canada jump forward by one hour at 2:00 a.m. local time.

The change signals the start of longer evenings and marks the beginning of the warmer months in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Although the shift means losing an hour of sleep, it also brings extra daylight in the evening.

What “Spring Forward” Really Means?

The phrase “spring forward, fall back” is often used to remember how clocks change during the year. In spring, clocks move one hour ahead, meaning sunrise and sunset occur later in the day.

In autumn, clocks are turned back by one hour, returning to standard time. This shift effectively redistributes daylight hours, giving people more usable daylight during the evening when most activities take place.

Europe Will Change Clocks Later?

While North America switches clocks in early March, most European countries follow a different schedule. The United Kingdom and other European nations will begin British Summer Time on March 29, 2026.

Because the transitions occur on different dates, the time difference between continents briefly changes during March until Europe completes its switch.

Why Daylight-Saving Time Exists

The concept behind daylight saving time is simple which is to make better use of natural daylight. The idea was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century as a way to conserve candles and energy.

However, the modern system was widely introduced during World War I, when countries adopted the practice to reduce fuel consumption. By shifting clocks forward in spring, societies could reduce the need for artificial lighting during the evening, saving energy at a time when electricity was more limited.

Not All Places Follow the System

Today, daylight saving time is used by only a portion of the world. Many countries near the equator do not observe the system because their daylight hours change very little throughout the year.

Even within the United States, some regions do not follow the time change. Hawaii and most of Arizona remain on standard time year-round.
