Discover December’s hidden Ursid meteor shower: Date, time and viewing tips

Skywatchers in North America can catch the Ursid meteor shower overnight. The shower peaks from December 21 into the early morning of December 22. Experts say the best activity occurs near 5 am EST. Observers are advised to rise early for the optimal viewing experience.

Why the Ursids are often overlooked

Unlike the bright Geminids, the Ursids are modest in display. December nights in the Northern Hemisphere are bitterly cold, limiting viewers. Clear skies, while ideal for observation, can make the chill sharper. Cloud cover often blocks the meteors from sight entirely. The peak coincides with holiday preparations before Christmas. Southern Hemisphere observers cannot see the Ursids, further limiting attention.

What to expect from the Ursid shower

The Ursids produce roughly five to ten meteors per hour. Activity can fall below one meteor per hour outside the peak. On December 21 at about 9:39 pm PST, Earth may cross a denser filament. This filament comes from debris left by comet Tuttle, reports Fox Carolina. Passing through it could briefly increase the meteor count. Not all meteors seen will belong to the Ursids. Observers should note the radiant to accurately identify sightings.

The Ursid meteor shower offers a quiet, intimate celestial experience. Dedicated stargazers willing to brave cold mornings will be rewarded.
