China has revealed new details about its bold lunar base initiative, aimed at establishing a sustainable presence on the Moon. This project, part of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) led by China with initial involvement from Russia, will be executed in two phases.

Phase One: Laying the Foundation

The concept for the ILRS was first introduced in June 2021, focusing on constructing a basic robotic moon base. This initial phase will involve five heavy-lift rocket launches between 2030 and 2035, aiming to set up a lunar base near the Moon's south pole by 2035. The base will rely on solar energy, radioisotope, and nuclear generators to sustain operations.

Phase Two: Expanding the Network

The second phase, set for completion around 2050, will expand the initial base into a broader lunar network. This network will feature a central hub in lunar orbit and include exploration stations at key locations, such as the lunar south pole, the equator, and the far side of the Moon. The plan also includes developing communication links between Earth and the Moon and high-speed systems on the lunar surface.

China is actively seeking international collaboration on the ILRS, with Senegal recently becoming the 13th nation to join. Meanwhile, NASA is advancing its own lunar ambitions through the Artemis program, aiming to return humans to the Moon by the decade's end.
