She was not only a regal figure in the woods. For decades, Vatsala was a gentle leader and embodiment of grace. On Tuesday, Panna Tiger Reserve's elephant camp matriarch took her last breath.
A Century of Sage Sighs Out Unobtrusively
Estimated to be more than 100 years old, Vatsala died in the Hinouta range of the Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh. Forest officials confirmed she died around noon near Khairaiya Nala. Due to a broken toenail in her front leg, she had been resting for some time, unable to move much.
Despite daily care, including special porridge meals and health checks from veterinarians, the ageing elephant's condition worsened. She had lost her eyesight and could no longer patrol with other elephants. Staff had been helping her bathe each day at the Nala and monitored her closely.
A Leader, Guardian, and Friend
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav paid tribute to her on X, calling her “the silent guardian of our forests.” He described her as a companion to generations and a living emblem of Madhya Pradesh’s natural heritage. She was first brought from Kerala to Narmadapuram and later shifted to Panna, where she became an enduring presence.
Vatsala was cremated with respect by forest officials and reserve staff. Over the years, she became a favourite among tourists and a guiding figure for younger elephants. Known for her calm nature, she cared for calves like a grandmother and led the herd with quiet authority.
A Legacy That Lives On
Officials said she also played a key role in the tiger reintroduction project in the reserve. Her long life was made possible by the reserve’s careful attention and dry forest ecosystem. Though she no longer walks the trails, Vatsala’s legacy remains deeply rooted in the soil she protected and the lives she touched.
