After de-extinction of dire wolves, Elon Musk wishes to have this prehistoric animal as a pet

Colossal Biosciences was able to successfully breed three wolf pup-like offspring of the extinct dire wolf by genetic engineering, igniting debate and enthusiasm on the possibility of de-extinction and designer species.

Dire Wolves Return After 10,000 Years as Scientists Engineer Living Pups

The dire wolf, now extinct, is returned, at least in spirit. These reconstituted wolves, named Remus and Khaleesi and snow-white-furred, are howling again in the American forest.

Using genetic manipulation to revive an ancient predator

Three wolf pups that resemble dire wolves have been produced. Today, Colossal Biosciences, a biotech firm, confirmed their survival. Last October, Romulus and Remus were born. Surrogate dogs delivered Khaleesi in January 2025.
They live on an 800-acre reserve that is guarded by professionals now. A company based in Texas, Colossal, was the driving force behind this unprecedented scientific mission. George Church and Ben Lamm founded the firm. They edited 14 wolf genes rather than cloning DNA from fossils. Twelve features of the ancient creature were manifested in these edits.

The result? Wolves with thick fur and jaws that can crush bone. They look very much like the extinct species but are not identical. Colossal used fossils to reconstruct the entire genome of a dire wolf. We worked with DNA from remains that were 11,500 and 72,000 years old.

"Two of these wolves have been resurrected from extinction," the company wrote in an X post.
There were images and fanfare-branding type of material in the web article.

Elon Musk asks for a teeny-tiny mammoth
Elon Musk launched a cheeky call to enter the viral discussion. He posted a Time cover where "Extinct" had been stricken and was superseded by "Remus." The Iron Throne followed in a Photoshopped picture. Musk tweeted shortly afterwards, "Please make a miniature pet mammoth."

The internet was restless, and social media was flooded with memes. It was made famous by jokes ranging from Jurassic Park to small mammoths. There were those who begged for pocket hippos, others who asked for dodos.

Colossal took it in stride without complaint
They are also working on mammoths. They even just made a woolly mouse that looks like a mammoth. Ben Lamm, the CEO, called the mouse a big de-extinction milestone.
However, Colossal has a specific and ambitious objective: they want to rewrite history using CRISPR technology. It is a campaign that fuses marketing, science, and spectacle.

There are concerns that designer dogs will be more fashionable in the future.
Will the rich order extinct species because of boutique biology? The world watches as the dire wolves come back for now.
