Study reveals alarming decline in the population of Golden Eagles of Nevada

Golden Eagles are generally stable across the western United States. However, Nevada’s population shows a concerning long-term downward trend. New research suggests the state may act as a population sink. High death rates threaten the breeding population and overall regional health.

Causes Of Mortality and Risk

Researchers found eagles dying from electrocution, collisions, and starvation frequently. Declines in rabbit populations due to RHDV2 further stress the species. Human developments like solar projects and mining reduce crucial habitats significantly. Wildfire, drought and disease compound pressures on the local eagle population.

Tracking Reveals High Turnover

Joe Barnes’ team tagged 43 subadult and adult eagles from 2014–2024. At least 30 of the tracked eagles died during this period. Despite deaths, nesting territories remained occupied, masking underlying population stress. Out-of-state birds and nonbreeding “floaters” likely fill vacated nesting sites.

Population Sink Dynamics

Persistent local sinks can harm broader regional populations over time. High mortality and reduced breeding success create a dangerous feedback loop. Floaters help sustain territory occupancy but do not prevent population decline. Long-term effects may impact Golden Eagles across Nevada and neighbouring states.

Habitat protection is critical to stabilise Nevada’s eagle population. Researchers emphasise monitoring nonbreeding individuals to better assess true numbers. Golden Eagles are resilient apex predators, but resilience has limits. Without proactive conservation, population sinks could undermine regional survival.
